Founding of Fort Caroline

French explorer René Goulaine de Laudonnière established Fort Caroline on the banks of the St. Johns River near present-day Jacksonville, Florida, in 1564. It was one of the earliest French settlements in what is now the United States. The fort served as a haven for Huguenots, French Protestants seeking religious freedom and was intended as a base for exploring and exploiting the New World. The colony was short-lived, as it was later destroyed by Spanish forces under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565. Today, the site is commemorated at Fort Caroline National Memorial.
