Palestinian and Israeli officials blamed each other, while later outside reviews pointed toward a likely misfired Palestinian rocket but did not end the political dispute. The blast intensified regional anger, prompted emergency diplomacy, and highlighted the extreme danger facing civilians seeking refuge in medical facilities during the conflict.

Within the first week of the war, Israel ordered civilians in northern Gaza to move south, signaling that a much larger military campaign was coming. The evacuation directive affected hundreds of thousands of residents and intensified a humanitarian emergency as families fled under bombardment, with limited fuel, food, water, and shelter. The order became a major milestone because it reshaped the geography of the war, divided Gaza into zones of combat and displacement, and foreshadowed the ground invasion that followed.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led militants crossed from Gaza into southern Israel in a large surprise assault involving rocket fire, attacks on communities and military sites, killings, and mass abductions. The attack killed about 1,200 people in Israel and led to the capture of roughly 251 hostages, triggering Israel’s declaration of war and a massive air and ground campaign against Gaza.
