Yvette Diane Clarke was born on November 21, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York City. She was born into a family with Jamaican roots, and her mother, Una S. T. Clarke, was a trailblazer as the first Caribbean-born woman elected to the New York City Council. On January 3, 2007, Yvette Clarke was sworn in as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 11th Congressional District. This marked the beginning of her tenure in Congress, succeeding Major Owens.
