Sakai became one of the major projects under the Apereo umbrella, benefiting from shared resources and strategic collaboration.

With the advent of the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard, Sakai integrated LTI support into its platform to enhance interoperability with third-party applications. This was a significant milestone that expanded the versatility and adaptability of Sakai as a learning management system. Educators and developers could seamlessly integrate external tools, offering a more comprehensive range of resources to users.

The Sakai Conference of 2009, also referred to as Sakai Con2012, was one of the biggest gatherings of the Sakai community. Held in Boston, USA, this conference brought together educators, developers, and institutional representatives to discuss advancements in the Sakai platform, share best practices, and collaborate on future development strategies. Keynotes and presentations from industry leaders made this event significant for the Sakai community.

To further the development and governance of the Sakai Project, the Sakai Foundation was established. The foundation was responsible for overseeing the project’s growth, coordinating contributions from its community of developers, and ensuring the sustainability and strategic direction of the Sakai platform. It played a crucial role in fostering collaboration and innovation within the Sakai community.

The Sakai Collaborative Educational Environment (Sakai CLE) was officially released. This platform represented the initial effort of the Sakai Project to develop a robust learning management system that could be utilized by academic institutions around the world. Featuring a suite of tools for collaboration, communication, and assessment, Sakai CLE laid the groundwork for future developments in e-learning technology.
