University of Karachi

The University of Karachi was established by an act of the parliament of Pakistan in June 1951. Initially, the University was housed in small buildings adjacent to Civil Hospital on M.A. Jinnah Road, Karachi, before relocating to its current location in 1962. Its foundation was meant to cater to the higher education needs of the city and to provide research opportunities especially after the creation of Pakistan in 1947.

In 1962, the University of Karachi relocated to its new campus, which was spread over 1200 acres of land in the University Enclave on University Road. This was a significant move from its initial location adjacent to the Civil Hospital on M.A. Jinnah Road, as the campus provided a larger space and better facilities for the rapidly growing student population.

The University of Karachi formed the Employees Welfare Association in 1981 to safeguard the interests of its non-teaching staff and to provide them with a platform to discuss their issues and problems. This initiative was aimed at improving the working conditions of the university's non-academic staff and ensuring their voices were heard in administrative decisions.

In December 1995, the University of Karachi launched its Department of Computer Science to cater to the growing demand for IT professionals in the region. This department was tasked with equipping students with the necessary skills in computing and information technology to meet market demands and contribute to industry growth.

The Confucius Institute at the University of Karachi was established in September 2005 to promote Chinese language and culture in Pakistan. This collaboration between the University and Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) was aimed at fostering cultural exchange and understanding between China and Pakistan.

A state-of-the-art multimedia center was inaugurated at the University of Karachi in November 2008, enhancing the University's facilities to train students in digital media production, broadcasting, and communication. This center was equipped with modern technologies to aid the academic and professional development of the students.

The University of Karachi signed an MoU with CERN in 2013 to enhance collaborative research opportunities in the field of high-energy physics. This partnership enabled students and faculty to participate in cutting-edge research projects at CERN, contributing to the global scientific community's understanding of fundamental physics.

In June 2015, the University of Karachi launched an online student portal to streamline administrative processes by digitizing student records, facilitating course registrations, and providing academic resources online. This initiative significantly improved the efficiency of university operations and student services.

The University of Karachi introduced the Green Campus Initiative in 2019, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of university operations by implementing sustainable practices. This included the installation of solar panels, energy conservation efforts, waste reduction programs, and promoting the use of bicycles and public transportation.

In November 2021, the University of Karachi opened a new Biotechnology Center to support research and development in biotechnology and life sciences. The center was equipped with advanced laboratories and facilities to conduct cutting-edge research in genetic engineering, molecular biology, and biochemical processes.
