Porto Seguro

On April 22, 1500, Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral landed in what is today known as Porto Seguro, Bahia, Brazil. This marked the official discovery of Brazil by Europeans. Cabral and his fleet originally intended to sail to India, but were blown off course. From June 3, 1992, Porto Seguro, along with Rio de Janeiro, hosted events related to the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, known as the Earth Summit or Eco 92. This global event brought attention to environmental issues and sustainable development. The conference was pivotal in raising awareness about the environmental challenges faced by humanity and proposed global solutions and frameworks. Porto Seguro played a role as a host city, highlighting the region's natural beauty and commitment to environmental sustainability.

On April 22, 2000, Porto Seguro marked the 500th anniversary of the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral and the discovery of Brazil. Celebrations across the city included reenactments, exhibitions, and cultural events that reflected on five centuries of history since the arrival of the Portuguese. In February 2003, the Alto da Sé Hospital was inaugurated in Porto Seguro.
