In 2017, Bucaramanga was recognized as one of the Colombian cities with the highest quality of life. This ranking was based on factors like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and a thriving cultural scene. Bucaramanga's urban planning, vibrant community life, and commitment to sustainability and innovation were noted as key elements contributing to its reputation as a city that offers a high standard of living.

On April 26, 2012, the Metrolínea mass transit system was launched in Bucaramanga, aimed at improving public transportation. As a bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Metrolínea provided an efficient and reliable transportation alternative to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. The system has played a crucial role in enhancing urban mobility and contributing to environmental sustainability efforts in Bucaramanga.

The new Constitution of Colombia was adopted on July 4, 1991, modernizing the nation's laws and impacting cities across Colombia, including Bucaramanga. It introduced significant legal and political reforms, contributing to increased political participation and civil rights protections. Bucaramanga, like many other cities, adapted to the changes, influencing its local governance and development policies.

On November 13, 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, causing a massive avalanche and the devastating Armero tragedy, one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in history. While Bucaramanga was not in the immediate vicinity, the humanitarian efforts and national response involved cities nationwide, including Bucaramanga, impacting regional coordination and civil defense strategies.

Palonegro International Airport, serving the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga, was inaugurated in September 1962, enhancing connectivity for the city. Located around 24 km from the city, the airport facilitated regional and national flights, contributing to economic development and making Bucaramanga more accessible. It replaced the older airport, leading to a significant boost in tourism and business.

The assassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán on April 9, 1948, in Bogotá led to widespread riots, known as the 'Bogotazo', affecting many Colombian cities, including Bucaramanga. The chaos and political instability from the event exacerbated tensions in Bucaramanga and contributed to the rise of conflict known as 'La Violencia.' The Industrial University of Santander (Universidad Industrial de Santander) was established in 1941 in Bucaramanga. The Constitution of Colombia of 1886 was enacted on August 5, 1886, replacing the federalist system with centralized government and influencing the political structure of cities like Bucaramanga. Under this new constitution, the country was reorganized, affecting administrative and political processes in Santander and Bucaramanga. This constitution remained in effect until it was replaced in 1991.

On July 20, 1810, Colombia's movement for independence from Spanish rule officially began, an event that would eventually impact Bucaramanga. While Bucaramanga itself was not the center of the independence movement, the effects of the revolution spread throughout the region, leading to eventual independence and significant social and economic transformations across Colombia, influencing cities like Bucaramanga.

Bucaramanga was founded on December 22, 1622, by Andrés Páez de Sotomayor and Miguel Trujillo. It started as a small rural settlement and was initially part of the jurisdiction of Pamplona, in the Province of Nuevo Reino de Granada. Over the centuries, it evolved from a quaint town to become the capital and largest city of the department of Santander, in northeastern Colombia, known for its industries and universities.
