Pope Benedict XVI visited Lourdes from September 13 to September 15, 2008, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Marian apparitions. During his pilgrimage, he participated in several religious ceremonies, including a Eucharistic celebration and a prayer vigil. His visit reinforced the importance of Lourdes as a place of pilgrimage and spiritual healing. The Pope's presence in Lourdes highlighted the enduring relevance of the apparitions' message of hope, conversion, and peace.

On August 15, 1988, Lourdes hosted the World Meeting of Youth, an international event that brought young people together for prayer, reflection, and celebration of their faith. In an effort to scientifically evaluate the claims of miraculous healings reported at the shrine, the Lourdes Medical Bureau was formally established on April 25, 1947. The bureau provides an impartial medical assessment of healing cases attributed to Lourdes' influence. This institution further legitimizes the site's reputation by rigorously investigating and certifying genuine healings, maintaining scientific robustness in cataloging miraculous recoveries and contributing to the site's veneration and respect in modern times.

On December 8, 1933, Pope Pius XI canonized Bernadette Soubirous as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. This recognition affirmed her profound impact on the Catholic faith and her role in the Lourdes apparitions. The canonization was a significant event that reinforced the sanctity of the Lourdes apparitions and further established the site as one of the most important and recognized centers of religious pilgrimage in the world. Saint Bernadette is remembered for her unwavering faith and humility throughout her life.

On October 29, 1908, the fiftieth anniversary of the Lourdes apparitions was celebrated. This event marked an important milestone for the sanctuary and was commemorated with pilgrimages, prayers, and celebrations. The Golden Jubilee highlighted the impact that the apparitions had on the Catholic community, illustrating the site's global significance as a pilgrimage destination, where believers from around the world come for spiritual renewal, healing, and communion.

On January 18, 1862, Bishop Bertrand-Sévère Laurence of Tarbes declared that the apparitions witnessed by Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes were genuine and worthy of belief. The church conducted thorough investigations into Bernadette's claims and the reported miracles before reaching this conclusion. This official recognition was a pivotal moment, allowing the construction of churches and facilities to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims to the site, solidifying Lourdes' role as an important center of faith and healing.

The series of apparitions experienced by Bernadette Soubirous concluded on July 16, 1858. During this final vision, Bernadette once again saw the Lady in white, who would smile at her but not speak. This event took place at the Massabielle grotto, the same location as the previous sightings. Despite initial skepticism from local authorities, the Catholic Church would later recognize the apparitions as authentic, leading to the development of Lourdes as a major site for pilgrimage and miracles.

On February 11, 1858, a 14-year-old local girl named Bernadette Soubirous reported experiencing the first of a series of visions of a lady dressed in white, who was later understood to be the Virgin Mary, at a grotto called Massabielle near Lourdes, in France. Bernadette described the lady as very beautiful, with a blue sash around her waist and golden roses on her feet. This event marked the beginning of numerous pilgrimages to the site, which would become known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, attracting millions of visitors seeking healing and spiritual solace.
