Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Antigua Guatemala is one of the most significant and elaborate religious celebrations in the Christian world. Every year, starting from April, this city becomes the center of attraction with its processions, elaborate alfombras (carpets) made from colored sawdust, flowers, and fruits. The city's unique approach to Holy Week, with its blend of religious fervor and artistic expression, draws visitors from around the world. This event is celebrated steeped in tradition and community involvement, embodying cultural and religious history.

In the 1990s, there was a resurgence of interest in traditional textile crafts in and around Antigua Guatemala. The region, known for its vibrant Mayan weaving techniques, saw a revival of these practices as both art and economic activity. Efforts to preserve these textile traditions were intensified as indigenous women became central to this cultural renaissance. Organizations and cooperatives formed to support artisans, ensuring that the traditional weaving arts were passed down to future generations and remained a key part of cultural identity and heritage.

Antigua Guatemala was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved Spanish Baroque architecture and its importance as a cultural center in the region. Recognized officially in 1979, the city’s rich history, traditions, and ruins showcase a blend of indigenous traditions with colonial Spanish elements, representing a unique cultural heritage. This designation has helped preserve its historical integrity and boost tourism, promoting the recognition of its cultural and historical significance worldwide.

In 1944, amidst the political unrest in Guatemala, Antigua Guatemala was a focal point for resistance against the oppressive Ubico regime. The city saw significant demonstrations and gatherings that contributed to the broader movement for democratic reforms in the country. On June 25, 1944, protests intensified as citizens demanded the resignation of President Jorge Ubico. This formed part of the larger 'October Revolution' that eventually toppled the dictatorship and restored democratic governance.

The 1773 Guatemala earthquake struck the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, known today as Antigua Guatemala, on July 29. This massive earthquake destroyed much of the city, which was then the capital of the Spanish Captaincy General of Guatemala. The earthquake led to the relocation of the capital to what is now Guatemala City. The ruins of the old capital have since become a significant historical and cultural site, attracting many visitors to the area. The disaster marked a pivotal change in the region’s history and urban development.
