Zadar

The Siege of Zadar was part of the Croatian War of Independence, which began when the Yugoslav People's Army attacked the city of Zadar in September 1991. The attack included heavy artillery shelling and targeted civilian infrastructure, causing significant civilian casualties and damage to the city's historic areas. The siege lasted until January 1992, eventually ending with Zadar remaining part of Croatia.

Zadar's Sea Organ, an innovative architectural sound art object, officially opened in 2004. Designed by architect Nikola Bašić, the organ is located on the city's waterfront and produces music generated by the sea waves interacting with 35 organ pipes under large marble steps. The Sea Organ has become a major tourist attraction and represents a successful blend of art, architecture, and nature.

The Greeting to the Sun is a solar art installation unveiled in 2005, located next to the Sea Organ in Zadar. Designed by Nikola Bašić, it consists of 300 multi-layered glass plates and solar panels, creating a visual spectacle of lights after sunset. The installation represents the sun and the planets, symbolizing renewable energy and sustainability while enhancing the public space.

Although not located in Zadar itself, the Cathedral of St. James in Šibenik, near the Zadar region, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. The cathedral represents the culmination of Dalmatian architectural style and has historical significance with cultural influences that resonate throughout the wider Zadar region.

On July 1, 2013, Croatia became the 28th member of the European Union, marking a significant milestone in the country's post-independence political development. This accession benefited regions like Zadar by enhancing economic opportunities and increasing the European integration of its citizens.

Every two years, Zadar hosts the Adriatic Sea Defense and Aerospace (ASDA) exhibition, showcasing the latest technology in defense and aerospace industries. The event attracts numerous international exhibitors and provides a platform for regional defense cooperation and business opportunities.

The Wings for Life World Run is a global charity event for spinal cord research, held annually in various locations worldwide, including Zadar. The city has hosted the event multiple times, attracting participants from around the world to run for a good cause while enjoying the scenic coastal route of Zadar.

The Zadar Basketball Club, known for its rich history and passionate fan base, won the Croatian national championship in November 2018. This victory marked one of the club's most significant achievements, showcasing the city's strong basketball tradition and its contribution to Croatian sports.

In September 2019, Zadar was selected as the European City of Sport for 2021 due to its excellent sports facilities and programs. This designation highlighted Zadar's commitment to promoting physical activity and supporting community sports, further enhancing its reputation as a dynamic and vibrant city in sports.

A solar telescope was installed in Zadar in June 2020 as part of an initiative to promote astronomy and science education among the public. The telescope allows residents and tourists to observe solar phenomena and enhances the city's educational attractions, strengthening its role as a center for learning and innovation.
