Wolfgang Tillmans

Wolfgang Tillmans, the influential contemporary photographer, was born on August 16, 1968, in Remscheid, West Germany. Tillmans became known for his innovative photography and art practice that challenged traditional distinctions between photography as a commercial and fine-art practice.

In 2000, Wolfgang Tillmans became the first photographer and the first non-British artist to be awarded the Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in the contemporary art world. His provocative work, which ranged from intimate portraits to abstract images, pushed the boundaries of photography as an art form.

In October 2003, Wolfgang Tillmans became the first German photographic artist to have a solo exhibition at the Tate Britain in London. His exhibition, titled 'If one thing matters, everything matters', showcased the diverse range of his photographic work at that time.

On March 15, 2020, Wolfgang Tillmans tested positive for COVID-19. His experience during the pandemic, which he shared through social media and interviews, underscored the vulnerability of artists and the importance of community support during such global crises.

In August 2022, Wolfgang Tillmans' work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The exhibition titled 'To look without fear' was a comprehensive showcase of Tillmans’ impact on contemporary art, featuring seminal pieces that explore a diverse range of themes such as identity, community, and the focus on process and experimentation.
