Confucius

Confucius, one of the most influential philosophers in Chinese history, was born in 551 BCE in the Lu state, which is present-day Qufu, Shandong Province, China. His teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese thought and life.

Confucius began his formal education at a young age, studying a variety of subjects including music, ritual, and history. This early education laid the foundation for his later work as a teacher and philosopher, emphasizing the importance of learning and moral development.

Confucius married at the age of 19. His marriage marked the beginning of his family life, during which he had several children. This period of his life is less documented, but it is known that his family was an important aspect of his personal life and teachings.

Confucius began his career in public service around 522 BCE, working in various governmental roles in the state of Lu. His work in public service provided him with insights into governance and ethics, which later became central themes in his teachings.

In 501 BCE, Confucius was appointed as the Minister of Justice in the state of Lu. His tenure was marked by efforts to implement ethical governance and justice. His approach to leadership and justice was based on moral integrity and the welfare of the people.

Due to political intrigue and opposition to his reforms, Confucius left the state of Lu in 497 BCE. He spent the next 14 years traveling through various states in China, offering his counsel to rulers and refining his philosophical ideas.

Confucius returned to his home state of Lu in 483 BCE after years of travel. He spent his later years focusing on teaching and compiling his philosophical works, which would later become central to Confucianism.

Confucius died in 479 BCE in Lu, leaving behind a legacy that would shape Chinese culture and philosophy for millennia. His teachings, recorded by his disciples, emphasized morality, social relationships, and justice.

The Analects, a collection of Confucius' sayings and ideas compiled by his disciples, was completed around 400 BCE. This text became one of the most important works in Chinese literature, serving as a foundational text for Confucianism.

In 136 BCE, during the Han Dynasty, Confucianism was established as the state philosophy of China. This decision institutionalized Confucian teachings in Chinese government and education, profoundly influencing Chinese society and culture.
