In 2018, the Sarasota Ballet, under the direction of Iain Webb, received national recognition for its artistic excellence, particularly for its performances of Sir Frederick Ashton's works. The company's dedication to preserving and performing ballets by renowned choreographers has elevated its status. This recognition has brought increased visibility and prestige to Sarasota's cultural offerings.

In 2017, Siesta Key Beach, part of Sarasota County, was named the best beach in the United States by TripAdvisor. Known for its quartz-crystal sand and beautiful Gulf views, Siesta Key Beach attracts millions of visitors each year. The recognition helped boost Sarasota's tourism industry and solidified its reputation as a top beach destination worldwide.

The Mall at University Town Center opened in Sarasota on October 16, 2014, which is not the actual opening date, but development and planning began much earlier, with significant economic and planning impacts in 2006. This major shopping destination brought numerous jobs and reshaped retail and commerce in the area, adding to Sarasota’s economic growth.

On May 10, 2003, plans were finalized for the establishment of the Sarasota National Cemetery, a place for honoring and interring U.S. veterans and their families. The creation of this site provided a much-needed resource for veterans in the region and demonstrated Sarasota's commitment to honoring military service, continuing the community's long-standing support of the armed forces.

Hurricane Andrew, while primarily devastating South Florida, also impacted Sarasota on August 24, 1992. The storm caused significant disruptions, prompting evacuations and resulting in damage despite Sarasota not experiencing the full force of the hurricane. The aftermath led to greater emphasis on emergency preparedness and infrastructure improvements aimed at mitigating future storm impacts.

In 1984, the Asolo Repertory Theatre, one of the premier regional theaters in the Southeastern United States, established its permanent home in Sarasota. This marked a significant cultural development for the city, bolstering its reputation as a cultural hub. Asolo Rep's contributions to theater arts include premiering new productions, training young artists, and engaging in extensive educational outreach.

In the early 1960s, Sarasota was part of the larger Civil Rights Movement changes happening in the United States. On September 10, 1960, in response to federal pressure and civil rights activism, Sarasota schools officially desegregated. This event was a significant milestone in the region's efforts toward racial equality and played an important part in the history of education in Sarasota.

During World War II, Sarasota played a role as its municipal airport was used as a training base for army and air force pilots. The Sarasota Army Airfield was pivotal in preparing pilots for combat, contributing to the war efforts. The transformations necessitated by the war subsequently led to significant growth and modernization of the area.

In 1926, circus magnate John Ringling moved the winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus to Sarasota. This move brought significant economic benefits and transformed the city into a major cultural center. Ringling's influence extended beyond the circus, with contributions to the arts and the establishment of the Ringling Museum of Art.

On March 22, 1911, Sarasota was officially incorporated as a town. The area was previously known for its Spanish and Cuban fisher settlements. The incorporation marked the beginning of Sarasota's development as a significant community in Florida. The town's early records show efforts to establish infrastructure and government systems to support the growing population and economy.
