Roquetas de Mar

The town of Roquetas de Mar was officially founded on March 6, 1573, although its history dates back much further with evidence of prehistoric settlements. During the 16th century, the region was part of a defensive network against pirate attacks from North Africa. The area's development was initially slow, mainly revolving around fishing and agriculture.

On June 7, 1829, Roquetas de Mar and its surrounding regions were struck by a significant earthquake. This earthquake affected much of the eastern part of the province of Almería, causing damage to structures and impacting the lives of the residents. As the earth shook, buildings that were not designed to withstand seismic events suffered considerable damage, necessitating a period of reconstruction.

During the Spanish Civil War, Roquetas de Mar was not immune to the violence that spread across Spain. On August 25, 1937, the town was subjected to bombing raids.
