The City of Palm Springs was incorporated on April 27, 1924. The incorporation marked the official recognition of Palm Springs as a city in Riverside County, California. On December 12, 1936, the El Mirador Hotel, a landmark luxury hotel in Palm Springs, was severely damaged by a fire. This hotel, which was built in 1927, was one of the most exclusive destinations in Palm Springs, frequented by Hollywood stars and wealthy tourists. The fire destroyed much of the original structure, but the hotel was eventually rebuilt, continuing its legacy as a centerpiece of Palm Springs hospitality and its celebrity-studded history.

Throughout the 1950s, Palm Springs became known as a celebrity hideaway, hosting numerous famous residents such as Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Elvis Presley. These individuals contributed to its reputation as a prestigious community and tourist destination. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, commonly known as Coachella, took place in April 2002 and became an annual tradition held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, near Palm Springs. Originally organized as a two-day event, Coachella has evolved into one of the most famous and profitable music festivals in the United States, known for its eclectic lineup of artists, art installations, and its influence on fashion and music trends worldwide.

On September 25, 2005, the contents of legendary comedian Bob Hope's Palm Springs estate were auctioned off, drawing attention from fans and collectors worldwide. His estate, a landmark in the city, reflected his iconic status in entertainment and was frequented by numerous celebrities during its time. On May 4, 2018, Sonny Bono, the singer, actor, and politician who served as the Mayor of Palm Springs and as a U.S. Congressman for California, was posthumously honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars. Known for his contribution to the city and his role in founding the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Bono left a lasting legacy in the cultural and political landscape of Palm Springs.
