Omaha

The city of Omaha was officially founded on July 4, 1854, and it was laid out by a company of speculators from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the Omaha Tribe. The area was strategically chosen for its location on the west bank of the Missouri River, making it a prime spot for settlement and commerce. This founding marked the beginning of Omaha's development as an important cultural and economic hub in the region.

In 1865, the Union Pacific Railroad established its headquarters in Omaha, which became a critical factor in the city's rapid growth. The Trans-Mississippi Exposition was a world's fair held in Omaha from June 1 to November 1, 1898. In 1945, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) was established at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, marking a significant development in global military strategy. Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, was transformed into a successful investment firm headquartered in Omaha, beginning with Buffett taking control in 1965. Under his leadership, Berkshire Hathaway grew into one of the world's largest and most successful companies. Omaha became known as the home of one of the greatest investors of all time.

In April 1975, Eppley Airfield in Omaha underwent a major expansion to accommodate increased air traffic and larger aircraft. The expansion involved the construction of a new terminal, runway refurbishment, and improved facilities, enhancing its capacity to serve as Nebraska's primary airport and supporting Omaha's growth as a transportation hub.

Starting in 1950, Omaha became the official home of the College World Series, an annual baseball tournament for NCAA Division I teams. The event has since become a major tradition in Omaha, attracting fans and teams nationwide. The series greatly contributes to the local economy and enhances Omaha's reputation as a welcoming sports city.

Dedicated on October 11, 1992, the Roman L. Hruska Federal Courthouse is an iconic building in downtown Omaha that houses multiple federal courtrooms and offices. Named after Roman Hruska, a prominent Nebraska senator, the courthouse’s opening represented a significant development for Omaha’s federal presence, symbolizing the city's growth and significance in federal matters.

In 2003, the Annual Housing Cost Study named Omaha as the most affordable housing market in the United States. This accolade was due to Omaha's combination of quality housing, reasonable costs, and a strong local economy, making it an attractive city for new residents.
