The Northampton Balloon Festival, one of the UK’s largest balloon festivals, moved to Billing Aquadrome in 2008. In 1888, Northampton was granted the status of a county borough. The shoe industry in Northampton peaked in the 19th century. By 1830, it was recognized as one of the leading centers for shoe production in the world, often called the ‘shoe capital of the world’. The Great Fire of Northampton in 1675 destroyed most of the town's wooden structures. Breaking out on a windy day, the fire spread rapidly due to the close-knit urban architecture of the time. It razed about 80% of the buildings, necessitating a complete rebuilding of the town. This calamity led to new building regulations that mandated brick and stone constructions to prevent such devastation in the future, reshaping Northampton's architectural landscape permanently.

The Battle of Northampton occurred on July 10, 1460, during the Wars of the Roses. It was a significant confrontation between the forces of the Lancaster and York houses. The battle resulted in a decisive victory for the Yorkists under the command of Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick. King Henry VI was captured, which effectively turned the tide of the Wars of the Roses in favor of the Yorkists at that time, leading to the short-term ascendancy of the House of York.

The Charter of Northampton was granted in 1100 by King Henry I of England. This charter allowed the town certain privileges and established its status as a borough. The charter marked the beginning of Northampton as an official town and enabled it to hold regular markets, contributing significantly to its growth and prosperity in the medieval period. This event played a crucial part in shaping the administrative and commercial aspects of Northampton during the Middle Ages.
