In 1516, Leonardo moved to France at the invitation of King Francis I. He was given the title of 'Premier Painter and Engineer and Architect to the King' and lived at the Château du Clos Lucé near the king's residence. Leonardo began painting the 'Mona Lisa' around 1503, a portrait that would become one of the most famous artworks in the world. The painting is celebrated for its sophisticated use of sfumato and the enigmatic expression of the subject, believed to be Lisa Gherardini, a Florentine woman.
