Grand Junction

Grand Junction, located in western Colorado, was officially founded on September 26, 1881. The city was established as a result of the increasing need for a regional hub for trade and transportation in the region. Named for its location at the junction of the Gunnison and Colorado Rivers, Grand Junction became a pivotal point for settlers and industries during the westward expansion.

In 1890, paleontologists discovered dinosaur fossils in the Grand Junction area, which significantly contributed to the field of paleontology and the study of dinosaurs in North America. This discovery drew scientists and researchers to the region, leading to further excavations and studies, and helping to establish Grand Junction as an important location for paleontological research.

The Grand Junction Sugar Factory opened in 1906, marking a significant development in the agricultural industry of the region. The factory processed sugar beets grown in Colorado, contributing to the region's economy and agriculture. This establishment also provided employment opportunities and helped in the modernization of agricultural practices in western Colorado.

The economic boom of the 1920s, including a surge in stock market investments, had significant impacts on cities across the United States, including Grand Junction. In 1922, investments and economic activities in Grand Junction increased, leading to growth in local businesses and an overall boost to the city’s economy. This period saw increased construction and development in the city.

In 1950, President Harry S. Truman signed the proclamation establishing the Colorado National Monument, a stunning area of canyons and rock formations near Grand Junction. This protected area became a major attraction for tourists and nature enthusiasts, bringing tremendous attention and tourism-related income to the region, and helping to preserve the pristine natural beauty of western Colorado.

On April 22, 1970, Grand Junction participated in the first Earth Day celebrations, joining a nationwide movement to raise awareness about environmental issues. Local environmental groups and citizens organized events to promote conservation and renewable energy, highlighting Grand Junction's commitment to environmental protection and sustainable practices.

Mesa Mall, the largest indoor shopping center in Western Colorado, officially opened its doors in Grand Junction on August 14, 1980. This event marked a new era in the retail sector for the region, providing a wide array of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. The opening of Mesa Mall also created numerous jobs and contributed to the local economy.

The financial crisis of 2008 had a significant impact on Grand Junction, as it did on communities across the United States. The city's housing market suffered from foreclosures and declining property values, and local businesses faced financial hardships. The crisis led to increased unemployment and prompted community efforts to support affected families and stabilize the local economy.

On May 10, 2013, Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction completed a major expansion project, adding new facilities and programs to accommodate a growing student population. The expansion included new academic buildings, residence halls, and sports facilities, enhancing educational opportunities and contributing to the university's reputation as a leading institution in Western Colorado.

In 2019, Grand Junction was awarded the bid to host the national cycling championships, drawing athletes and tourists from across the country. This event highlighted Grand Junction's excellent outdoor sports facilities and scenic landscapes, promoting the city as a premier destination for cycling enthusiasts and boosting local tourism and hospitality industries.
