On February 14, 2019, Durango was included in Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos Program, a government initiative to promote towns that offer visitors a 'magical' experience due to their natural beauty, cultural riches, and historical relevance. This inclusion aimed to boost tourism, preserve cultural heritage, and improve infrastructure, recognizing Durango's unique contributions to Mexico's cultural landscape.

The expansion of the Durango International Airport was officially inaugurated on December 12, 2017. This development was part of a strategic move to enhance and modernize transportation infrastructure, thereby boosting both domestic and international tourism and trade. The expansion included additional terminals, modern facilities, and improved connectivity, marking a significant step in Durango's economic development.

On September 16, 2010, Durango, like many other Mexican cities, celebrated the Bicentennial of Mexico's Independence. The grand celebrations included parades, historical reenactments, and various cultural events, paying tribute to the country's fight for freedom and the heroes who led the independence movement against Spanish rule.
