EU-Turkey statement formalizes the deal that reshapes migration into Europe
The EU and Turkey finalized their migration statement in Brussels, agreeing that new irregular migrants crossing from Turkey to the Greek islands after 20 March 2016 would be returned to Turkey, alongside a resettlement mechanism for Syrians and major EU financial commitments. The deal became one of the most consequential legacies of the 2015 European migrant crisis. Supporters said it sharply reduced dangerous crossings and deaths in the Aegean, while critics argued it outsourced responsibility and endangered asylum protections. Either way, it marked the end of the crisis’s most chaotic phase and set the pattern for Europe’s later migration diplomacy.
