The University of Wolverhampton, originally founded as a Mechanics' Institute in the mid-19th century, received full university status on December 8, 2003. This marked a significant milestone in its development as an educational institution, offering a broader range of degree programs and expanding its research capabilities. On April 1, 1974, Wolverhampton was integrated into the newly formed West Midlands Metropolitan County as a result of the Local Government Act 1972. September 17, 1938, saw the end of an era with the closure of the Wolverhampton Corporation Tramways. The Wolverhampton Wanderers, commonly known as Wolves, won the FA Cup on February 1, 1927. In October 1866, Wolverhampton faced one of its most devastating natural disasters - the Great Flood. The flooding highlighted the need for better drainage and flood defenses in the area. This event spurred changes in urban planning to prevent similar occurrences in the future, prompting investments in infrastructure to manage water flow better.

On July 1, 1847, Wolverhampton was established as a Municipal Borough under the Municipal Corporations Act 1835. This marked a significant transition in the governance of Wolverhampton, giving it more autonomy and control over local affairs, including policing and infrastructure.
