University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne was founded on November 22, 1853. It was established by Hugh Childers, the Auditor-General and Finance Minister, and is the second oldest university in Australia. Located in Melbourne, Victoria, it has grown to become a leading international university, embracing a comprehensive research agenda, a broad array of disciplines, and an open culture.

In 1903, the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music was established as part of the University of Melbourne. The Melbourne Research Institute was founded in 1996 to facilitate high-level research collaborations across disciplines. In 2008, the University of Melbourne introduced the Melbourne Curriculum, a reform to align its education system closely with global standards such as those in the United States. In 2012, the University of Melbourne launched the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, a joint venture with the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
