The University of Florida traces its origins to 1853 when the Florida Legislature passed a bill establishing a public university system. The East Florida Seminary, which eventually became part of the University of Florida, was started in Ocala but relocated to Gainesville in 1866 after the Civil War. This marked the beginning of what would become the University of Florida, officially designated as the flagship institution for higher education in the state.

The University of Florida was officially established in its current form in 1905 due to the implementation of the Buckman Act, which reorganized Florida's higher education system. Multiple institutions, including the East Florida Seminary and the Florida Agricultural College, were consolidated to form the university. In January 2008, the University of Florida inaugurated the Charles R. Perry Construction Yard, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to research and education in construction. In 2017, UF Health Shands Hospital was recognized as one of the leading hospitals in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. It was ranked in multiple adult and pediatric specialties, underscoring the hospital's excellence in healthcare services and its role as a critical healthcare provider in the region.
