Reliance Industries Limited was founded on 8th May 1973 by Dhirubhai Ambani. Initially focusing on textiles, the company rapidly expanded its operations into petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, retail, telecommunications, and other sectors. Today, it is one of the largest conglomerates in India and is renowned for its diversified interests and business model.

Reliance Industries revolutionized the Indian telecommunications industry by launching Reliance Telecom in 1995, introducing affordable mobile telephony services. This marked a significant change in how Indians communicated, setting the stage for further innovations in the telecom sector and democratizing access to mobile communication across the country.

On December 28, 2002, Reliance Industries commissioned the Jamnagar Refinery in Gujarat, which became the world's largest grassroots refinery. With an initial capacity of 660,000 barrels per day, it was later expanded to 1.24 million barrels per day, playing a crucial role in making India a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

Reliance Industries made a significant entry into the retail sector by launching Reliance Retail in 2006 but significantly ramped up operations by 2010. It now operates over 10,000 stores across India and spans segments including grocery, consumer electronics, apparel, and lifestyle, directly competing with established national and international players.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, launched its 4G broadband services on 5th September 2016, marking a new era in the Indian telecom sector. Relying on disruptive pricing strategies, Jio transformed data consumption in India, compelling other telecom operators to lower prices and improve services, thereby benefitting millions of users.

Reliance Industries completed the acquisition of media and entertainment company Network18 in 2017, gaining control over popular television channels and internet properties. Network18 owns a range of channels like CNBC-TV18 and CNN-News18, enhancing Reliance's influence in the Indian media landscape and providing robust platforms for diverse content delivery.

On July 15, 2020, Google announced a major investment of $4.5 billion in Jio Platforms, acquiring a 7.73% stake. This strategic partnership focused on development of affordable smartphones alongside an Android-based operating system tailored for the Indian market, accelerating India's digital transformation and internet accessibility.

JioMart, an e-commerce venture by Reliance Retail, was launched in September 2020, and quickly became a significant player in the grocery delivery space across India. It is positioned as a competitor to Amazon and Flipkart in the Indian e-commerce market, leveraging Reliance's large retail network and digital capabilities to deliver a wide range of products.

Reliance Industries announced its first foray into renewable energy with plans to set up four 'giga factories' for solar panels, the first of which was launched in 2021. This ambitious venture aligns with global sustainability trends and India’s renewable energy goals, emphasizing Reliance's commitment to alternative energy sources beyond traditional oil and gas.

Reliance Industries launched India's first dedicated hydrogen fuel station in 2022 as part of its investment into clean energy. This development underscores Reliance's strategic focus on renewable energy and sustainable practices, furthering India’s climate action agenda while establishing its leadership in green innovations both domestically and globally.
