On 22 June 1897, in Pune, the Chapekar brothers - Damodar Hari, Balkrishna Hari, and Vasudeo Hari Chapekar - assassinated two British officials, Charles Walter Rand, an Indian Civil Service officer, and Lt. Charles Egerton Ayerst, as a retaliation against the British oppression manifested in the handling of the bubonic plague outbreak. The actions of the Chapekar brothers were motivated by their intense nationalist sentiments and anger over the oppressive and high-handed measures adopted by the British authorities during the plague epidemic, which included forcible home entries and segregation of people. This assassination was a significant event in the Indian freedom struggle, marking an early instance of revolutionary activity against the British Raj. The Chapekar brothers were eventually arrested, tried, and executed for their actions, and their story inspired a wave of nationalist fervor across India.
