Pontianak

In March 2023, Pontianak was included in Indonesia's National Tourism Strategy as a key destination. Recognized for its potential in cultural and ecotourism, Pontianak received government support to develop its tourism infrastructure further. This inclusion is expected to boost the local economy and promote conservation of its unique cultural and natural heritage.

By 2020, Pontianak was actively developing itself into a Smart City. This initiative included the integration of information and communication technology to improve urban services, including traffic management, waste management, and public safety. This transformation aimed to enhance the quality of life for its residents and make the city more attractive to investors and tourists.

The expansion project for Supadio International Airport in Pontianak was launched on September 15, 2013. This project aimed to increase the capacity and modernize the facilities to accommodate the growing number of passengers and flights. The expansion supported economic growth in the region by improving connections and accessibility to Pontianak.

The Equator Monument in Pontianak was renovated and modernized, a project completed in September 2005. The monument, a major tourist attraction, marks the location where the equator passes through the city. The modernization included building new facilities to accommodate tourists, making it an iconic landmark and promoting Pontianak as a scientific tourism destination.

On June 30, 1999, the border dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia over parts of Borneo, which includes the province of West Kalimantan where Pontianak is located, was resolved. This agreement helped to ease tensions and fostered better relations and collaboration between the two countries, allowing for more stability and economic development in the region.

In 1967, devastating ethnic conflicts erupted in Pontianak and the surrounding areas. These conflicts were primarily between indigenous Dayaks and ethnic Chinese residents. The violence resulted in significant loss of life and displacement of people. This incident marked a period of tension and recalibration of social dynamics within the city.

In July 1956, West Kalimantan, with Pontianak as its capital, was officially established as a separate province in Indonesia. This development was part of Indonesia’s post-independence efforts to organize its administrative divisions more efficiently. As the capital, Pontianak became an important center for governance and regional development.

With the surrender of Japan on August 15, 1945, following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Pontianak was liberated from Japanese rule. This marked the end of a difficult period for the city and its inhabitants, who had suffered greatly during the occupation. The event opened the door for the integration of Pontianak into the newly declared Republic of Indonesia.

In 1942, during World War II, Pontianak came under Japanese occupation. The occupation lasted until the end of the war in 1945, significantly affecting the city's demographic and socio-economic conditions. During this time, many local leaders and intellectuals were targeted and executed in what came to be known as the Mandor Affair.

On October 23, 1771, the city of Pontianak was founded by Syarif Abdurrahman Alqadrie. It started as a trading port and has since grown into a major urban center in the province of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The city was strategically established along the banks of the Kapuas River and has a rich history intertwined with the sultanate and local cultures.
