Odessa University, now known as Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, was founded on May 2, 1838. It was established as the Imperial Novorossiya University in Odessa during the Russian Empire and quickly became one of the leading educational institutions in the region. The incident was sparked by the serving of maggot-infested meat and harsh conditions aboard the ship. The rebellion spread political unrest throughout the Russian Empire and became a significant moment in revolutionary history. Odessa was the backdrop to these events, where the battleship arrived and the crew hoped for support from the city. However, the uprising was not supported widely, and the ship eventually sailed to Romania. The mutiny was later immortalized in Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 silent film, "Battleship Potemkin".

The Siege of Odessa was a significant military operation during World War II that took place from 5 August to 16 October 1941. The Axis forces, primarily composed of Romanian and German troops, encircled the Soviet port city of Odessa on the Black Sea. Despite the city's strong fortifications and the determination of the Soviet forces, the prolonged siege eventually led to the fall of Odessa. The city endured heavy bombardment and fierce fighting. The siege ended with a Soviet evacuation, as Axis forces took control. Odessa suffered significant damage and casualties, but the defenders' resistance delayed further Axis advances into the Soviet Union. This siege is remembered for its demonstration of the resilience and strategic importance of Odessa during the war.

The Odessa Film Studio, one of the oldest and most iconic film studios in Ukraine, underwent major renovation and modernization in 1955. Established in 1919, the film studio became famous for producing numerous Soviet films and training notable directors and artists. By the mid-20th century, the facilities required significant updates to keep up with technological advancements in the film industry. The Potemkin Stairs, a giant stairway in Odessa, Ukraine, was officially inaugurated on April 12, 1961. While initially constructed between 1837 and 1841, the stairs were significantly renovated and given their iconic status in the mid-20th century. They are famously known from Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 silent film "Battleship Potemkin." The stairs consist of 192 steps and create an optical illusion, wherein the steps are invisible from the top, giving a view of a continuous slope. The Chernomorets Stadium, a key sports venue in Odessa, opened its doors on July 12, 1999, after undergoing significant renovation. Originally built in 1936, the stadium has served as the home for FC Chornomorets Odessa. The renovation was aimed at expanding the stadium's capacity, modernizing its facilities, and improving safety standards to host local and international sports events. On May 2, 2014, violence erupted in Odessa amid the pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine following Russia's annexation of Crimea. Clashes between pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian activists in the city resulted in a tragic fire at the Trade Unions House that claimed 42 lives among the 48 total fatalities. The incident occurred as a march for Ukrainian unity was confronted by separatists. The ensuing violence involved street battles that culminated in the fatal fire. The event remains a deeply controversial and sensitive topic, with ongoing debates about its causes and the adequacy of the response by authorities.
