Northrop Grumman traces its lineage to the founding of the Northrop Corporation in 1939, originally as Northrop Aircraft Incorporated. The company was established by Jack Northrop, a pioneering aviation engineer. Northrop Aircraft focused on innovative aircraft designs and produced several important military aircraft during World War II and beyond.

Northrop Grumman Corporation was formed in 1994 when Northrop Aircraft acquired Grumman Corporation. This merger combined Northrop's strengths in aerodynamics, electronics, and advanced systems with Grumman's expertise in naval systems, creating a larger and more diversified defense contractor. The merger propelled the company to become one of the largest defense contractors in the world.

In November 2001, Northrop Grumman completed its acquisition of Litton Industries Inc., a leading provider of advanced technology products and services for the defense and maritime industries. The acquisition strengthened Northrop Grumman's position in the electronics industry and expanded its capabilities in producing navigation systems, avionics, and other critical systems for military applications.

Northrop Grumman acquired TRW Inc. in November 2002, significantly enhancing its capabilities in space, electronics, and systems integration. TRW was a major player in the aerospace industry, known for its work in scientific satellites, defense electronics, and automotive products. This acquisition positioned Northrop Grumman as a dominant force in the space and defense sectors.

In June 2008, Northrop Grumman was awarded a significant contract by NASA to develop the James Webb Space Telescope. The James Webb is designed to be the premier observatory of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide. As the prime contractor, Northrop Grumman is responsible for designing and building the telescope's spacecraft element, a key component in advancing astronomical knowledge.

In March 2011, Northrop Grumman spun off its shipbuilding sectors into an independent company, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). This strategic realignment aimed to focus more on aerospace, electronic, and information systems, allowing HII to become a standalone leader in military shipbuilding without the constraints of a larger conglomerate. This move enabled both entities to specialize in their respective industries.

On October 27, 2015, the United States Air Force awarded Northrop Grumman the contract to build the Long Range Strike Bomber, later designated the B-21 Raider. This contract was significant in securing Northrop Grumman's role in developing next-generation stealth bombers for the U.S. military. The B-21 is expected to play a crucial role in Air Force operations for decades to come, maintaining strategic deterrence.

In June 2018, Northrop Grumman completed its acquisition of Orbital ATK Inc., a global leader in aerospace and defense technologies. This acquisition expanded Northrop Grumman's capabilities in space, missile defense, and advanced weapons systems, integrating Orbital ATK's innovative propulsion systems and satellite components into Northrop Grumman's portfolio, enhancing its competitiveness in the aerospace sector.

On April 1, 2020, Northrop Grumman was awarded the contract to develop the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), which serves as the replacement for the United States' Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). This contract highlights Northrop Grumman's pivotal role in modernizing the U.S. nuclear deterrent, ensuring reliable and resilient land-based strategic defenses for the future.

On December 2, 2022, Northrop Grumman and the United States Air Force publicly unveiled the B-21 Raider stealth bomber in a formal ceremony. The B-21 represents the latest in strategic bomber technology, designed to perform long-range missions and penetrate sophisticated enemy defenses. This event marked a milestone in Northrop Grumman's development of advanced military aircraft.
