Naguib Mahfouz

Naguib Mahfouz passed away on August 30, 2006, in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 94. His death marked the end of an era in Arabic literature. On October 14, 1994, an assassination attempt was made on Naguib Mahfouz outside his Cairo home. An Islamist extremist stabbed him in the neck, seriously injuring him. Mahfouz survived but the attack resulted in nerve damage that limited his ability to write. The attack was believed to be related to his perceived criticism of Islamic fundamentalism in his works, particularly the novel 'Children of the Alley'.

Naguib Mahfouz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988, making him the first Arab writer to receive this honor. Naguib Mahfouz was born on December 11, 1911, in the Gamaliya quarter of Cairo, Egypt. He was the youngest of seven siblings. Mahfouz grew up in a bustling neighborhood full of diverse cultures and histories which later influenced his writing. His family was middle-class and his father worked in the civil service. Despite his family's conservative nature, Mahfouz was encouraged to pursue education and was exposed to modern ideas and literature at an early age.
