On June 7, 2011, the Marsha Sharp Freeway in Lubbock was officially opened. Named after the legendary Texas Tech basketball coach, the freeway was a major infrastructure project for the city. The South Plains Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the region, opened in Lubbock on April 15, 1988. On May 11, 1970, Lubbock experienced one of the most devastating tornadoes in its history, an F5 tornado that hit the city in the evening. The tornado resulted in over $530 million in damage (in 1970 dollars), making it one of the costliest tornadoes in U.S. history at the time. The disaster prompted improvements in community storm preparedness and response.

Charles Hardin Holley, known professionally as Buddy Holly, was a legendary figure in rock and roll history and was born in Lubbock, Texas. His tragic death on February 3, 1959, in a plane crash was a significant event that deeply impacted Lubbock. Buddy Holly's music and legacy are celebrated in the city with statues and an annual festival, highlighting his enduring influence on music and culture in Lubbock.

Lubbock Army Airfield, later known as Reese Air Force Base, was established on April 30, 1932. Initially serving as a training location during World War II, it became a pivotal part of military aviation training. The base contributed to the local economy and had a significant impact on the community before its closure in 1997. The facility is now known as Reese Technology Center, which fosters research and development.

Lubbock was officially incorporated as a city on March 16, 1909. It was named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Confederate officer and Texas Ranger. The city developed rapidly as a major center for the agriculture and livestock industries. The establishment of Texas Tech University in 1923 significantly contributed to the city's growth, making it a hub for education and culture in West Texas.

On February 10, 1923, Texas Technological College, now known as Texas Tech University, was established in Lubbock.
