Lansing

The first recorded settler in the area that would become Lansing Township was E. D. L. Stark, who built a house in 1847. Lansing Township itself was organized in 1842 as a portion of Ingham County, Michigan, amidst the rise of several such settlements in the area. The township was eventually named by settlers from Lansing, New York, reflecting the origin of many who settled there. This event marked the beginning of a community that would eventually evolve into the city of Lansing, Michigan's state capital.

The Michigan legislature was prompted to move the state capital from Detroit to a location more geographically centralized due to concerns including distance from settlers located in western Michigan and the threat of British troops stationed across the Detroit River. In a somewhat unconventional decision, the little-known settlement of Lansing Township was chosen as the new capital in 1847.
