Kyushu University

Kyushu Imperial University was established as one of the imperial universities in Japan in 1911. It was originally founded in Fukuoka, designed to promote higher education and advanced research in various fields. The aim was to support Japan's growing industrial needs. The university has since grown into a comprehensive institution offering a wide range of academic programs.

In November 1947, following World War II, Kyushu Imperial University underwent a major reorganization and was renamed as Kyushu University. This change was part of a broader reform of educational institutions in Japan, transitioning imperial universities into national universities. The university's focus expanded to embrace more diverse academic disciplines and include more international collaboration.

Kyushu University founded the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I²CNER) as part of its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The institute focuses on the development of technologies for carbon-neutral energy production and storage. It collaborates with international researchers to address global energy challenges and aims to contribute to the achievement of global carbon neutrality.

On October 11, 2005, Kyushu University established the Clinical Research Center at its hospital to advance medical research and improve patient care. The center is dedicated to conducting high-quality clinical trials and fostering innovations in treatment methodologies. It facilitates collaboration between researchers and clinicians to translate scientific discoveries into medical advancements.

The Ito Campus of Kyushu University officially opened in July 2009, marking a significant expansion of the university's facilities. The campus spans several acres and is designed as a fully integrated environment for education, research, and community engagement. It includes state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms, providing a modern setting for cutting-edge research and academic innovation.

In April 2010, Kyushu University established the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering. This new faculty combined several departments to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration and improve education and research in information, computation, and electronics. It supports the growing need for expertise in information technology and aims to produce graduates who can lead in digital innovation.

Kyushu University launched the Institute of Decision Science for a Sustainable Society (IDS3) in 2013 to address complex societal challenges. IDS3 uses decision science methodologies to support sustainable development across multiple sectors, including environmental policy, economics, and urban planning. It aims to produce actionable insights for creating a sustainable future through interdisciplinary research and collaboration.

In June 2017, Kyushu University established the EU Centre to promote academic and cultural exchange between Japan and the European Union. The EU Centre serves as a hub for collaboration and networks with European institutions, facilitating joint research projects and educational programs. It enhances students' understanding of European culture, politics, and economies, enriching the academic environment at Kyushu University.

On April 2, 2018, Kyushu University inaugurated the Hydrogen Energy International Research Center, focusing on hydrogen technology and its applications. The center aims to advance research into hydrogen production, storage, and utilization as a clean energy source. It collaborates with industrial and academic partners globally to lead innovations in hydrogen-based solutions for sustainable energy needs.

The School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation was established at Kyushu University in July 2019, focusing on transcending traditional academic boundaries. This school aims to foster creativity and innovation by integrating diverse fields of study, preparing students to tackle complex global challenges. It provides a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration, encouraging novel approaches to scientific inquiry and societal problem-solving.

Kyushu University inaugurated the LIDAR Research Center in January 2021 to advance research in light detection and ranging (LIDAR) technology. This center focuses on developing innovative applications for LIDAR in mapping, navigation, and environmental monitoring. It positions Kyushu University at the forefront of LIDAR research, solidifying its role as a leader in the field of remote sensing technology.
