On 12 May 2022, Jean-Pierre Papin announced that he was considering running for the presidency of the French Football Federation. His decision came amid a period of reflections about the direction of French football and its governance. Papin, having had a distinguished career in football as both player and manager, sought to bring his insights and experience to a leadership position where he could influence the strategic direction of French football.

On 15 September 2014, Jean-Pierre Papin returned to football in a new capacity as he was named the athletic director of C'Chartres Football. In this role, Papin was responsible for overseeing the athletic development and strategies of the club, aiming to leverage his extensive experience as a player and manager to benefit the club's ambitions and performance in French football.

On 21 June 2007, following his successful stint at Strasbourg, Jean-Pierre Papin was appointed the manager of RC Lens. In June 1992, after a hugely successful period with Marseille, Jean-Pierre Papin transferred to AC Milan for a then world-record fee.
