Typhoon Frank, internationally named Fengshen, made landfall in the Philippines in June 2008. Iloilo was one of the hardest-hit areas, with severe flooding affecting 44 out of 47 municipalities. On December 25, 1898, Filipino revolutionaries attacked the Spanish forces in Iloilo City. This battle was one of the last stand-off of Spanish colonial governance in the Philippines. The city was strategically important, and its capture signified increasing Filipino control over the archipelago after the Spanish-American War. This was followed by the eventual establishment of the Philippine Republic.
