On April 10, 2003, Garden Grove celebrated the centennial of its fire department, marking 100 years since its inception. The Garden Grove Fire Department was originally established to protect the growing community from increasing fire threats as the city expanded. Over the years, it evolved to provide comprehensive emergency services, adopting modern fire-fighting technologies and techniques. Although not directly in Garden Grove, the Disneyland theme park located nearby in Anaheim significantly impacts the city, including jobs and tourism. On October 3, 1997, Disneyland debuted its new iteration of the Main Street Electrical Parade, a nighttime parade featuring floats adorned with thousands of electronically controlled lights. Garden Grove became an officially incorporated city on June 18, 1956. At the time of incorporation, Garden Grove was mostly agricultural land transitioning into a suburban residential area. This move towards incorporation was driven by the post-World War II economic boom which was spurring rapid development and urbanization in Southern California, and the community's desire for self-governance and better allocation of tax resources to support infrastructure and public services like schools and fire departments.

Garden Grove, located in northern Orange County, California, was founded on June 15, 1874, by Alonzo Cook. Cook and other settlers were attracted by the potential of the fertile soils and mild climate, perfect for agriculture. Initially, the area was intended for growing wheat and other crops, and over time, it developed into a thriving agricultural community. This was when the first post office was built, marking Garden Grove as an official settlement. As the 20th century approached, the city started to transition from agriculture to residential due to increasing population and urban development.
