Ferdinand Magellan

On September 6, 1522, the ship Victoria, the only surviving vessel of Magellan's fleet, returned to Spain, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Although Magellan did not survive the journey, his expedition proved the world was round and opened new maritime routes.

Ferdinand Magellan was killed on April 27, 1521, during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines. He was involved in a conflict with local chieftain Lapu-Lapu, who resisted Spanish influence. Magellan's death was a significant setback for the expedition, though it continued under new leadership.

Magellan's fleet arrived in the Philippines on March 16, 1521. This marked the first time Europeans had reached the archipelago. Magellan established relations with local leaders, which initially seemed promising for the Spanish crown's interests in the region.

On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain, with a fleet of five ships. His goal was to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. This expedition marked the beginning of what would become the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

After falling out of favor with the Portuguese court, Magellan moved to Spain in 1517. He sought support from the Spanish monarchy for his plan to reach the Spice Islands by sailing westward, a route that had not yet been attempted successfully.

Magellan participated in the Portuguese conquest of Malacca in 1511, a strategic port in Southeast Asia. This victory was significant for the Portuguese as it allowed them to control the spice trade routes, and Magellan's role in the battle furthered his reputation as a skilled navigator and soldier.

In 1505, Ferdinand Magellan joined the Portuguese fleet as a young man, embarking on his first voyage to India. This experience was crucial in honing his skills in navigation and maritime warfare, setting the stage for his future explorations.
