In June 1976, Colorado Springs cemented its role as a critical location for U.S. military and aerospace defense operations when it became the headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Set deep within Cheyenne Mountain, NORAD's mission involved monitoring aerospace threats and providing missile defense. Colorado Springs was officially founded by General William Jackson Palmer on July 31, 1871. Originally envisioned as a high-quality resort community, the city quickly grew due to its proximity to mining and the arrival of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. Palmer named the area after the natural spring waters located nearby. In the summer of 1859, during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush, nearly 300,000 gold-seekers flocked to the area now known as Colorado. The city of Colorado City, which is now part of Colorado Springs, was founded on July 1, 1859, as a supply hub for the miners seeking their fortunes. Positioned at the base of the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, the city played a crucial role in the early settlement and development of the Colorado Territory. It became a key location for trade and resupplying due to its strategic location near the mountains and the gold mining activity.
