On January 21, 2015, Coimbatore was selected under the Smart City Mission of India, an initiative aimed at transforming urban centers to become more sustainable and citizen-friendly. This mission includes plans for modernizing infrastructure, increasing urban mobility, enhancing communication technology, and improving resource management. The mission seeks to make Coimbatore a model city with improved quality of life, sustainable development, and efficient public services.

TIDEL Park Coimbatore was inaugurated on November 5, 2009, as an IT park established to promote information technology and business process outsourcing companies in the region. Spread over a vast area, the park offers state-of-the-art facilities and has attracted numerous multinational companies, thus contributing to Coimbatore's emergence as a technology hub in Tamil Nadu, creating thousands of jobs and boosting the local economy significantly.

The completion of the Coimbatore Bypass in 2005 was a major infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the city. By redirecting heavy vehicular traffic away from the city center, the bypass has not only facilitated smoother transportation but also contributed to the economic activity by improving connectivity to industrial areas and reducing travel time significantly.

The Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) was launched in 2000, marking a significant advancement in healthcare facilities in Coimbatore. KMCH has grown to become one of the largest and most advanced multi-specialty hospitals in the region, offering a wide range of healthcare services including advanced surgery, oncology, and cardiology. On February 14, 1998, the city of Coimbatore witnessed a series of bomb blasts orchestrated by religious extremists. The attacks targeted several locations in the city, including public spaces and crowded areas, resulting in the deaths of 58 people and injuring more than 200 others. The bombings shocked the nation and led to widespread condemnation, sparking changes in security measures and policies to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Coimbatore International Airport was inaugurated in March 1981, facilitating increased connectivity for the region. The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation was formed in 1934 to manage the city's civic infrastructure and administration. This was an important step in the city's development, as it allowed for better management of resources, urban planning, and public services. Since then, the Corporation has been responsible for a variety of functions ranging from water supply, waste management, and maintaining roads to public health and education efforts in Coimbatore.

PSG College of Technology was founded in 1930 in Coimbatore, becoming one of the premier educational institutions in Tamil Nadu. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering and technology courses. In 1928, the Siruvani Water Supply Scheme was inaugurated to improve the water supply to Coimbatore city. The project, which involved constructing a reservoir and a sophisticated distribution system, was aimed at addressing Coimbatore's water needs as the city was expanding rapidly due to industrial growth. The Siruvani reservoir is one of the main sources of drinking water for Coimbatore and is known for its quality and taste, second only to the Nile in terms of natural sweetness.

The Battle of Coimbatore was a significant event in the history of South India that took place in 1804. It was part of the larger conflict during the Anglo-Mysore Wars where the British East India Company clashed with the Kingdom of Mysore. Coimbatore, being a strategic location, became a battleground. The conflict at Coimbatore ended with the British gaining control over the region, marking a turning point in the expansion of British influence in South India.
