Clearwater

Clearwater was incorporated as a town in 1891, and later became a city in 1915. Over the years, Clearwater has developed into a major tourist destination, renowned for its award-winning beaches, pleasant climate, and vibrant community life. The city's growth has been influenced by its prime location on the Gulf of Mexico.

Pinellas County, which includes Clearwater, was officially incorporated in 1912. Prior to that, it was part of Hillsborough County. The incorporation allowed for more localized governance and has enabled the development of Clearwater as a distinct community within the region, influencing its urban growth and tourism industry.

The Clearwater Beach Library and Recreation Complex was established in 1953 to serve the growing community on Clearwater Beach. Clearwater was originally part of Hillsborough County but became part of the newly formed Pinellas County in 1912. It gained its status as an independent city on May 18, 1915. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium was founded in 1972, but it officially opened to the public in 1980. The City of Clearwater began the development of Beach Walk in 2002, a $30 million streetscape redevelopment project that transformed the look and feel of Clearwater Beach. Beach Walk features a winding promenade surrounded by resorts, restaurants, and other attractions, providing easier access to the Gulf of Mexico and enhancing the experience for visitors and residents alike.

The Clearwater Threshers, a minor league baseball team, opened their new stadium, Bright House Field (now BayCare Ballpark), in 2004. This modern facility became a significant venue for sports events, concerts, and community activities, further enhancing the cultural and recreational offerings of Clearwater.

Coachman Park, located in Downtown Clearwater, began undergoing major renovations in 2013 to revitalize the area and improve facilities for concerts and public events. The park is a central location for community gatherings and now hosts various city events, providing a scenic waterfront view of the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Clearwater Jazz Holiday is an annual music festival that began in 1979, taking place each October and featuring a variety of jazz artists. In 2016, it attracted over 30,000 jazz enthusiasts to Coachman Park, showcasing renowned performers from around the world. This event has become a staple in Clearwater's cultural scene.

Winter the dolphin was rescued in December 2005, but she became famous when her story was depicted in the movie 'Dolphin Tale', released in 2011. Winter was found entangled in a crab trap line near Cape Canaveral, Florida, and brought to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Her story gained national attention due to her ability to thrive despite losing her tail, thanks to a prosthetic device.
