Chiang Mai Zoo opened on November 5, 1965, becoming the first zoo in Northern Thailand. The completion of the Northern Railway extending to Chiang Mai in 1923 marked a transformative moment for the region's connectivity and economic development. In 1774, Chiang Mai became a vassal of Siam (now Thailand) through the Treaty of Alliance, after having been occupied by Burmese forces for many years. This marked the beginning of the end of Burmese influence over the region and paved the way for Chiang Mai to be integrated into the emerging Thai state. The alliance with Siam helped to drive out Burmese forces and strengthen local governance.

Chiang Mai, the capital of Lan Na Kingdom, was founded on April 12, 1296, by King Mangrai. As a strategic location in a fertile valley on the Ping River, Chiang Mai became an important cultural and religious center in the region. King Mangrai fortified the city against attacks and it grew in significance, becoming the center of the Lan Na culture and a hub for the spread of Theravada Buddhism.
