Cali

Santiago de Cali, now commonly known as Cali, was officially founded by Sebastian de Belalcazar, a Spanish conquistador, on July 25, 1536. The city is situated in the Valle del Cauca department in southwestern Colombia. Santiago de Cali quickly became an important center due to its strategic location and fertile ground, which allowed agriculture to thrive. Over centuries, it has grown to become one of Colombia's main cities, with significant economic, cultural, and political influence in the region.

On July 20, 1810, Cali, along with other parts of New Granada (now Colombia), witnessed the Cry of Independence. This significant event marked the beginning of the Colombian battle for liberation from Spanish colonial rule. The local elites in Cali and the surrounding region pushed for a rearrangement of local governance, which ultimately contributed to the collapse of the Spanish authority in the area. The Universidad del Valle, one of Colombia's most prestigious public universities and the main academic center of Cali, was established on August 24, 1954. On October 2, 2016, a national referendum took place in Colombia to approve a peace agreement with the FARC guerrillas. Though narrowly rejected, this historic vote involved significant participation from Cali's population, reflecting its impact on the region. The peace agreement aimed to end over five decades of conflict and was critical for the future of Colombian society.
