Brownsville

Brownsville was officially founded on December 13, 1848, by Charles Stillman, who established the city on former Mexican territory following the conclusion of the Mexican-American War and the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It became an important site due to its location by the Rio Grande, facilitating trade and transport between the United States and Mexico. Additionally, its strategic position contributed to its involvement in border conflicts and commerce, driven by Stillman's investments in steamboats and land developments.

The Battle of Palmito Ranch, fought on May 12-13, 1865, near Brownsville, Texas, was the final battle of the American Civil War. It occurred more than a month after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. Union forces attempted to capture Brownsville to enforce the blockade of Confederate ports. Despite being a Confederate victory, the battle had little strategic significance as the war was nearly over. This battle highlighted Brownsville's role as a significant military target due to its proximity to Mexico, where trade and supplies could bypass the Union blockade.

The arrival of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway on July 1, 1904, marked a significant development in Brownsville's transportation infrastructure. This new rail line connected Brownsville to the larger U.S. rail network, boosting economic growth by facilitating the transport of agricultural and manufactured goods. It also fostered increased migration and commerce in the region, transforming the city into a key trade hub between the United States and Mexico. The Brownsville Affair was a racial incident that occurred on August 13-14, 1906, involving tensions between black soldiers from the 25th Infantry Regiment and white residents. The shooting incident led to the unjust discharge of 167 black soldiers without a court-martial, solely based on the testimony of white townspeople. This event highlighted racial discrimination issues in the military and led to public outcry and investigations.
