Aziz Sancar

In July 2023, Aziz Sancar chaired an international conference on DNA repair mechanisms. On September 30, 2022, the Aziz Sancar Institute was inaugurated at the University of North Carolina. This institute was dedicated to research in molecular biology and biochemistry, continuing Sancar's legacy of scientific discovery and collaboration, focusing on innovative approaches to DNA study.

In 2021, Aziz Sancar published a comprehensive book detailing his scientific journey, challenges, and achievements. This book was well-received in the scientific community and provided insights into his personal experiences as a scientist, as well as his philosophy about perseverance and scientific inquiry.

In 2020, Aziz Sancar announced a collaborative initiative with the Turkish government to enhance scientific research in Turkey. On April 19, 2016, the Turkish translation of 'Basic Principles of Science' was published, featuring contributions from Aziz Sancar, who emphasized the importance of science education. This edition aimed to promote scientific literacy in Turkey and introduce young Turkish students to scientific thinking and methods.

On October 7, 2015, Aziz Sancar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Tomas Lindahl and Paul Modrich for their discoveries in the mechanisms of DNA repair. Their work provided crucial insights into how cells maintain genetic information integrity, having implications for cancer treatment and aging.

In 2004, Aziz Sancar and his collaborators determined the structure and mechanism of DNA photolyase, an enzyme that repairs UV-damaged DNA. This discovery was significant because it revealed how photolyase interacts with DNA and repairs it under visible light, enhancing the understanding of DNA repair mechanisms.

In 1993, Aziz Sancar joined the University of North Carolina faculty as a professor. At UNC, he continued his research work, focusing on DNA repair, cell cycle checkpoints, and damage response in cells. His work at UNC contributed significantly to his later scientific achievements and collaborations with other prominent researchers.

Aziz Sancar was born on September 8, 1946, in Savur, a small town in southeastern Turkey. He was born into a lower-middle-class family and is the seventh of eight children. Sancar completed his primary and middle education in Savur, after which his family prioritized his continuing education for the bright young Aziz.
