The liberation of Apeldoorn occurred on April 17, 1945, during the closing months of World War II. Canadian forces, part of the first Canadian Army led by Lieutenant-General Charles Foulkes, played a crucial role in liberating the city from German occupation. The operation, part of a larger Allied offensive to free the whole region of the Netherlands from Nazi control, was conducted with minimal urban destruction. The liberation was part of the broader battle plan known as Operation Cannonshot. Apeldoorn's liberation marked a significant step towards the complete liberation of the Netherlands from German forces, which officially occurred on May 5, 1945, with the formal German surrender. Today, Liberation Day is commemorated annually.

On April 30, 2009, a tragic attack occurred in Apeldoorn during the Dutch national holiday Queen's Day, now known as King's Day. A man drove his car at high speed into a crowd watching the royal family's parade, resulting in the deaths of eight people, including the attacker, and wounding ten others. The royal family was unharmed. This attack was shocking as it occurred on what is typically a joyous and celebratory day. The incident led to increased security measures for future royal events and sparked discussions on public safety during large gatherings. The physical impact area was the intersection near the Loolaan and Zwolseweg. It remains one of the darkest days in recent Dutch history.

On March 31, 2013, a significant fire broke out at the Woldhuis in Apeldoorn, a residential building providing sheltered living for individuals with disabilities managed by the ’s Heeren Loo organization. The blaze destroyed the majority of the building. Fortunately, there were no casualties due to the quick response from emergency services and staff, who managed to evacuate everyone safely.
