The Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE), which has been experiencing rapid growth since its inception, saw significant advancements on September 15, 2009, with the expansion of trading commodities. On August 16, 2010, the Zhengzhou Aviation Economy Zone (ZAEZ) was officially launched, with the aim of becoming a major air transport and logistics hub. The ZAEZ was designed to capitalize on Zhengzhou's strategic location and existing transportation infrastructure to boost economic development through the aviation industry. On June 30, 2011, Zhengzhou was officially recognized by the Chinese government as a National Historical and Cultural City. Zhengzhou East Railway Station, one of the largest and most important railway stations in China, officially opened on September 28, 2012. The station serves as a key hub in China’s high-speed rail network, linking routes towards Beijing, Guangzhou, and many other major cities. In July 2021, Zhengzhou experienced severe flooding caused by record-breaking rainfall, resulting in extensive damage and loss of life. From July 17 to 20, 2021, the city received an extraordinary amount of rain, nearly equivalent to its annual average. The floods overwhelmed the city's drainage systems and caused widespread havoc, submerging streets and disrupting transportation. The tragedy put a spotlight on urban planning and infrastructure resilience in the face of climate change, prompting discussions on improving future disaster prevention and management strategies.
