Tommaso Augello

Tommaso Augello was born on February 25, 1924, in the town of Sciacca, Italy. He grew up in a family known for its fishing traditions. His early life was marked by the challenges of pre-war Italy, which shaped his character and future pursuits.

During World War II, by 1944, Tommaso Augello became actively involved in the Italian resistance movement. He was part of a group that focused on disrupting German operations and supporting the Allies' advance through intelligence work and sabotage. His exposure to the resistance deeply influenced his worldview in the post-war period.

In 1950, Tommaso Augello founded the Augello Fishing Company, a testament to his family's heritage and his entrepreneurial spirit. The company quickly became renowned for sustainable fishing practices, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fish populations and marine ecosystems, which was innovative for its time.

On September 22, 1968, Tommaso Augello was awarded for his significant contributions to environmental sustainability within the fishing industry. His pioneering efforts in promoting ecological balance and sustainable harvest practices were recognized by international environmental organizations.

Tommaso Augello published his memoirs, titled "Tides of Change," where he chronicled his early life, experiences in the Italian resistance, and his involvement in transforming the fishing industry. The memoirs provided insights into post-war economic development and environmental conservation.

Tommaso Augello announced his retirement from active management of the Augello Fishing Company on March 3, 1982. His decision came after over three decades of overseeing its growth into a leading example of sustainable environmental practices within the international fishing community.

On August 19, 1989, Tommaso Augello established the Marine Conservation Fund, aimed at supporting oceanographic research and conservation efforts worldwide. This initiative reflected his lifelong dedication to the health of ocean ecosystems and inspired many similar efforts across the globe.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was granted to Tommaso Augello on December 29, 1995, by the International Marine Organization. The award acknowledged his relentless advocacy for sustainable fishing, his influence in the conservation community, and his role in shaping environmental policies.

The Augello Marine Research Center was inaugurated on November 11, 2004, dedicated to researching marine biology and conservation techniques. Founded with the support of Tommaso Augello’s Marine Conservation Fund, the center became a hub for international scientists and conservationists.

Tommaso Augello passed away on May 20, 2010, leaving behind a legacy of environmental activism and innovation in sustainable fishing. His life's work influenced many sectors and inspired a new generation of environmental leaders committed to the preservation of marine life.
