Tempe

The city of Tempe, Arizona, was founded in 1871 by Charles Trumbull Hayden. This establishment was the result of Hayden settling in the area and setting up a ferry service and later on a flour mill. The area was named by Darrell Duppa after the Vale of Tempe in Greece, reflecting its potential for growth and prosperity. During its early years, Tempe was pivotal in agricultural development in Arizona.

On June 12, 1887, the Rio Salado Project, aiming to control the flooding of the Salt River through Tempe and improve local irrigation, commenced. The project marked a significant step in the infrastructure and urban development of the area, showcasing an early effort to harness and manage water resources for agriculture and community protection. This helped pave the way for future growth.

Arizona State University (ASU) was established on February 4, 1894, initially as the Territorial Normal School at Tempe. ASU began with 33 students and became a hub for education in Arizona.
