Taichung

On January 1, 2020, Taichung was officially recognized as a special municipality. This change in status brought about additional administrative powers and responsibilities, marking a significant step in the city's development. It allowed Taichung greater autonomy in governance and made it eligible for more resources from the central government, promoting further economic and infrastructural growth.

The 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition was inaugurated on December 16, 2016. The event showcased Taichung's commitment to sustainability and biodiversity, featuring spectacular floral displays and gardens. It attracted millions of visitors from around the globe, highlighting Taichung's capabilities in hosting large-scale international events and bolstering its reputation as a green city.

The Taichung Station of Taiwan High Speed Rail officially opened on September 30, 2014, enabling much faster travel between Taichung and other major cities like Taipei and Kaohsiung. This development has significantly boosted Taichung's connectivity and economic growth by reducing travel time and encouraging tourism, making it a central hub in Taiwan's transport network.

Taichung City Hall was inaugurated on October 31, 2011. The new city hall became the administrative center for the Taichung City Government, reflecting the city’s expansion and modernization efforts. The building incorporates sustainable design principles and serves as a symbol of Taichung's commitment to progress and environmental awareness.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House was held on November 16, 2004. Designed by the renowned architect Toyo Ito, the opera house is an architectural marvel, featuring innovative design and unique acoustic properties. It has become a cultural landmark in Taichung and is a hub for performing arts, attracting artists and visitors from around the world.

On September 21, 1999, the Jiji earthquake, also known as the 921 earthquake, struck Taiwan, causing widespread damage and loss of life. Taichung was among the severely affected areas, with significant destruction to buildings and infrastructure. The event spurred major changes in building codes and disaster response strategies in Taiwan, leading to improved community resilience.

Fengjia Night Market, one of the largest and most famous night markets in Taiwan, was officially opened on October 15, 1986. Located near Feng Chia University, it has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a wide variety of street food, clothing, and entertainment. The market is integral to the local culture and economy, embodying Taichung's vibrant night life.

The National Museum of Natural Science is one of the most prominent museums in Taiwan. Established on August 1, 1976, in Taichung, the museum covers various fields of science, including astronomy, ecology, paleontology, and geology. The museum's extensive exhibits offer educational experiences for visitors of all ages, becoming an important center for science education and research in Taiwan.

The original Taichung Train Station was completed on December 25, 1920. This landmark station is a key part of Taiwan's railway network and has facilitated regional transport and economic development since its inception. Its architecture is a fine example of early 20th-century design, and the station remains a bustling hub in downtown Taichung.

Taichung First Senior High School, one of the oldest and most prestigious high schools in Taiwan, was founded on October 10, 1911. It has been a leading institution in the region, known for its high educational standards and its influence in the Taiwanese education system. The school has produced numerous notable alumni, including politicians, scientists, and business leaders, contributing significantly to the development of Taiwan.
