Sylvia Garcia

Sylvia Rodriguez Garcia was born on September 6, 1950, in San Diego, Texas. She grew up in a small community with a large Latino population, and her early experiences in this environment would shape her views and later political career, focusing on civil rights and community development. She attended law school and worked her way up in Texas politics.

On November 5, 2002, Sylvia Garcia was elected as the Harris County Commissioner for Precinct 2 in Texas. She became the first woman and the first Latina to be elected to this position. During her tenure, she focused on improving local infrastructure, community services, and advocating for strong environmental protections. Her work in the role brought significant attention to issues affecting her community.
